As a Black woman growing up in the Western world, there is so much discourse surrounding Black hair. Part of me always felt like I had something to prove. As if it was my responsibility to prove Black women were capable of growing long and healthy hair.

What is “The Big Chop”?

In essence, the big chop refers to cutting your hair very short to regrow it as healthy as possible. This is common for those who have damaged hair due to excessive heat styling, chemical treatments, and overall neglect. This dramatic cut is the kickstart to a healthy, natural hair journey.

I’ve had relatively “long” hair for the majority of my adult life and never would I have imagined pulling off short hair. I certainly didn’t think I had the face shape for it, whatever that means.

Fast forward to last year, I snipped the inches off and started fresh. This was such a liberating moment for me.

Now that I am on a healthy hair journey, here are the products that I have been using and loving.

Natural Hair Products to Use After a Big Chop

Once you’ve big chopped, it is very important to establish a natural hair routine. Your routine must be simple enough that you don’t get overwhelmed but effective enough to yield results.

1. Moisturizing Shampoo

I have been burning through Maui Moisture products for a couple of years and they have quickly become some of my favourites. Their shampoos do a great job of cleaning without stripping your hair. Hence the name. I am currently loving the Strength & Length + Castor and Neem Oil line.

2. Deep Conditioners and treatments

When it comes to deep conditioners, I can’t say that I am loyal to a specific one. I reach for different brands for a variety of reasons. Sometimes I need a surge of moisture and other days a good protein treatment is necessary.

When it comes to moisturizing deep conditioners, this one by Shea Moisture is one of the best out there that I have tried. This one by Aussie is affordable and leaves your strands feeling instantly moisturized.

3. Leave in Conditioners

Leave-in conditioners are going to be your best friend when it comes to maintaining moisture. They are great for use on wash days as a follow-up after a deep conditioner or treatment. They are even better used as part of our daily styling routine. If there is anything you take away from this entire post, this is it. This leave-in by Shea Moisture is one of my all-time favourites. Garnier Fructis also carries one of my second favourites.

If you haven’t added a leave-in conditioner into your routine, you’re missing out. I recently started experimenting with Marc Anthony products, particularly their leave-ins. I’ve concluded that most work very well for curly and natural hair. This one is great and also doubles as a heat protectant and protects up to 425 degrees.

4. growth oil

This last one is a personal preference and I have been using it for the past year. I added it to my routine to encourage and stimulate growth. I find that it helps with sealing in the moisture on my scalp and preventing it from itching in between wash days. Over the past year, I have focused on staying consistent and nursing my skin back to “health”. I’ve tried several vitamin C-based products and I think I have finally found my startling lineup.

While I tried a range of products, I was intentional about finding products that were affordable and sustainable. A high price tag doesn’t necessarily equal results.

Here are the three skincare products that I have been obsessing over this year.

Garnier Pinea-C Serum Cream

This one has been in heavy rotation since I received it in a PR mailer a couple of years ago. Aside from containing vitamin C and pineapple extract, this serum also doubles as a sunscreen and moisturizer containing SPF 30. It blends seamlessly into the skin and doesn’t leave a white cast – a major plus for melanated girls like myself.

Bonus points for multipurpose products!

Mighty Patch Pimple Patches

I received these pimple patches in a PR package a few months ago and I can honestly say: I understand the hype. They work great overnight to essentially suck the gunk out of active breakouts and help to avoid picking. While I don’t have regular breakouts, I have acne-prone skin that likes to surprise me from time to time.

I’ve used these patches a handful of times over the past few months and highly recommend them. While they are seemingly popular and often sold out, Ulta and Amazon.ca frequently stock them.

The Ordinary Ethylated Ascorbic Acid 15% Solution

This is my go-to vitamin C serum lately. It is lightweight, doesn’t sting, and absorbs well into the skin. It is however quite strong and is to be applied only once a day, my preference being at night.

Prior to this one, I was using Ascorbic Acid 8% and Alpha Arbutin 2% but recently found out that it was discontinued. Truth be told, the earlier version of the Ascorbic Acid is not nearly as good at the Ascorbic Acid 15%. I’ve tried a number of The Ordinary vitamin C serums but none come close to the results this one provides. I’ve seen a significant improvement in the appearance of my acne scars.

Black skin not only burns in the sun but we are susceptible to skin cancer too. The misconception there lies within the assumption that melanin-rich skin has a natural defence against the sun. A built-in barrier so to speak. Like many others, I was well into my adult years when I learned just how important SPF was.

Once I came to this realization, I came across another hurdle. The majority of sunscreen brands are not dark-skin friendly. The grey/blue cast that they leave behind might deter Black women from adding SPF into their daily skincare routine.

A few brands (not many) have introduced sunscreen formulas that go on sheer on darker skin in recent years. This is encouraged me to test out as many sunscreens as I can get my hands on and share the ones that work well.

Dark-Skin Friendly Sunscreens for Every Budget

I’ve rounded up five affordable sunscreens that are dark-skin friendly. Next time you come across any of them in your local drugstore, pick one up and try it out!

Black Girl Sunscreen

This one is hands down the G.O.A.T. of dark-skin-friendly sunscreens. It goes without saying that if you are lucky enough to get your hands on this one as it always sells out.

Banana Boat Kids Tear Free Sunscreen

This sunscreen has the highest SPF in this roundup and has quickly become my favourite. Also, 240ml of product? This is such a steal. It is a good option for the entire family and works for the whole body.

I have started using this one on my face and love that it doesn’t sting my eyes (kid-friendly!) like most.

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydro Water Gel Sunscreen

I admit I was skeptical about trying this sunscreen out but I’m so happy that I bought it! It has the texture of a gel moisturizer and reminds me of the Clinique Moisturizing Gel. It leaves a beautiful glow that makes my skin look and feel so supple. A really great option for oily-skinned girls.

La Roche-Posay Ultra Fluid Invisible Finish

La Roche-Posay has a great line of skincare products so this is another good option! It goes on sheer (almost invisible) so you can feel comfortable not wearing makeup to cover up any discolouration.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch

I was initially worried that this one would be pasty since it is thicker and has a higher SPF than the Hydro Boost formula. Happy to say that I was wrong. I do have to say that the consistency is a bit heavy for the summer so I would personally keep this as a fall/winter option.

Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen

Supergoop! has been doing wonders in the world of inclusivity with suncare products. I have tried and loved both the Play! and Unseen sunscreens.

Both are equally great but I prefer Play! as it can be used for the whole body.
